The Fundamentals of Outbreak Detection and Enteric Epidemiology (FOODEE) course introduces the foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to detect, investigate, and respond to foodborne and enteric disease outbreaks.
Designed for new and practicing public health professionals in epidemiology roles, this course provides a step-by-step learning experience through a series of modules that explore the key concepts, tools, and processes involved in outbreak detection and investigation. Together, these modules build the knowledge and skills needed to contribute effectively to outbreak response as part of a public health team.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, learners will be able to:
- Describe foundational concepts and practices in enteric disease outbreak detection and investigation.
- Identify key steps in the detection, investigation, and response to enteric disease outbreaks.
- Apply core epidemiologic principles and tools to common outbreak investigation activities.
- Contribute to an enteric disease outbreak investigation as a member of their public health team, with appropriate guidance and support.
Successful Completion
To successfully complete FOODEE and earn your certificate, you must:
- View all lectures and complete all applied activities.
- Earn a score of at least 75% on each knowledge check.
- Complete both the pre-course and post-course assessments.
Primary Competency Framework
FOODEE was developed around the Core Competencies for Epidemiologists, which are a set of competencies that outline the knowledge and skills needed by epidemiologists working in foodborne illness outbreak detection, investigation, and response at local, state, territorial, and tribal public health agencies.
The competencies are organized into three tiers, reflecting increasing levels of skill complexity and professional responsibility. FOODEE focuses on Tier 1 activities, including building foundational knowledge and skills to help learners contribute effectively to outbreak investigations with guidance from experienced team members.
Development Partners
FOODEE was developed collaboratively by the five Integrated Food Safety Centers of Excellence (Food Safety CoEs) and the Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center to support workforce development in enteric disease epidemiology and outbreak response.
