The Council to Improve Foodborne Outbreak Response (CIFOR) is a collaboration of national associations and agencies representing epidemiology, environmental health, public health laboratories, and regulatory agencies involved in foodborne disease surveillance and outbreak response.

Since 2006, CIFOR has improved methods to detect, investigate, control, and prevent foodborne disease outbreaks.

A key task for CIFOR is to identify barriers to rapid recognition and response to foodborne disease outbreaks. CIFOR develops guidelines and tools that address barriers and promote prevention strategies.

The Integrated Food Safety Centers of Excellence uses CIFOR’s products to develop needs assessments, training, and tools. Based on their effectiveness, the Food Safety CoEs strongly recommend CIFOR’s resources to state and local health departments.
